Health & Safety Spotlight - Ladder Gates and Toe Boards

New Zealand’s legal construction standards and best practice can sometimes be difficult to understand and interpret. The bottom line is that it is paramount to keep the health and safety of contractors and builders in check. SafeSmart is focused on controlling hazards and reducing injuries in construction and other related industries. We only offer gear that is manufactured to ISO9001 accreditation or similar and regularly tested to AU/NZ safety standards by external test laboratories and independent engineers.

In our mission to provide complete health and safety improvement services to our members and clients, we are equipped with innovative machinery and tools and we follow the Best Practice Guidelines for Scaffolding in New Zealand.

Currently in the spotlight with scaffolding health and safety is the use of ladder gates and toeboards.

Ladder Gates – these gates secure the access points on the scaffold to reduce the risk of falls from heights. They are fitted with a steel toe board and connect to the scaffold with two pressed steel couplers installed in place. A gravity swing hinge swings the gate back in place so that it doesn’t move around during high winds – ideal to ensure high levels of health and safety.

Toe boards – this is a horizontal barrier installed at floor level along open edges of floors, platforms, runways, ramps, wall openings – to help prevent materials from falling. It is suggested that toe boards are used on edges from 1m above the ground and upwards.
